What agentic AI means for your business, and what it doesn't
Agents are not smarter chatbots. Here is a plain-language guide to what AI agents can do today, where they fit and how to start with one workflow.

Most businesses have now tried a chatbot. It answers questions, sometimes well, and then hands the work back to a person. Agentic AI is different: an agent is given a goal, makes a plan, uses tools and completes the task, asking a human only when it should.
Chatbot vs agent in one example
A customer emails to ask why their order is late. A chatbot can reply with your shipping policy. An agent can look up the order, check the courier's tracking, see that the parcel is stuck at a depot, draft an apology with a new delivery date, offer the discount your policy allows and log everything in your CRM. A person approves the reply with one click.
Where agents fit today
Agents are ready for work that is repetitive, rules-based with some judgement, and spread across several tools. Good first candidates:
- Triaging and drafting replies to support tickets
- Reading invoices, CVs and forms and entering the data into your systems
- Researching leads and keeping the CRM clean
- Answering internal questions from policies and documentation
- Preparing weekly reports from several data sources
Where they don't, yet
Agents are a poor fit for decisions with high stakes and no review step, for processes nobody can describe, and for work where the data simply isn't available. In those cases we say so, and often recommend fixing the process or the data first.
How to start: one workflow, measured
- Pick one workflow your team repeats every day.
- Measure it today: volume, time per item, error rate.
- Build a pilot on real data in four to six weeks, with a person reviewing every output.
- Compare against the baseline, then decide whether to scale.
Useful beats hype. If an agent can't beat the baseline on your own data, it shouldn't go to production.
